LOST & FOUND | JOAQUIN TORRES-GARCIA

Joauin Torres-García is a Uruguayan artist who had a show at MoMA recently, The Arcadian Modern. The exhibition showcased his rough-hewn children’s blocks that combine folk and primitive silhouettes with the constructivist, geometric form that was the stylistic darling of the day.

In the early 20th century, Torres-García created these “art toys” as he referred to them, after observing his Greek and Roman-named children at play (Olimpia, Augusto, Iphigenia and Horacio), and seeing that they broke their toys in order to learn how they functioned. He realized that these toys didn’t answer the child’s need to learn and so designed these delightful playthings in parts that could be interchanged…
